OrangeFS®

Store and access large datasets in parallel

This Omnibond path leads to OrangeFS®. The sections below outline the path, then open orangefs.com for support or orangefs.org for the open-source project.

Overview

When one server's disk can't keep up with the run

OrangeFS spreads data and metadata across storage servers so throughput scales with the cluster. Linux nodes mount it with an upstream mainline client (since 4.6), and MPI-IO paths are tuned for the way HPC and training jobs actually hit shared files.

On orangefs.com: production support and cloud options. On orangefs.org: open-source releases and docs.

Parallel file access across many storage servers
Many clients, many servers, one shared namespace

Parallel access at the protocol level

Jobs that stage datasets and launch multi-rank runs expect every node to read together.

  • Distributed data and metadata so capacity and bandwidth grow by adding servers
  • Linux mounts your schedulers and containers already understand
  • Mainline client since Linux 4.6
  • Fewer I/O wait surprises when ranks open shared files at once

Built for training, fine-tuning, and simulation

OrangeFS fits campaigns where every GPU or MPI rank hits shared files hard, the kind of load where one server's SSD ceiling shows up early.

  • Distributed training: parallel reads and checkpoint writes without serializing on one head node
  • Fine-tuning at scale: stage model and dataset shards once, serve concurrent workers from aggregated bandwidth
  • Simulation campaigns: time-step I/O, restart files, and ensemble runs that hammer storage in sync
  • Genomics and data-intensive science: multi-node throughput for large shared datasets

Open source when you want it, support when you need it

You do not need projectEureka to start here. OrangeFS stands on its own: open-source project on orangefs.org, and Omnibond support, enterprise installers, and cloud marketplace options on orangefs.com. Integrate with projectEureka later when governed AI workspaces matter.

orangefs.com: support and services, enterprise installers, and cloud marketplace options.
orangefs.org: open-source releases, docs links, and downloads. Upstream Linux kernel client since 4.6.
